Living in St. Paul as I do (well, technically, I now
live in Roseville, but it *feels* like St. Paul) it seems
like the Ford Plant is always on Ford's chopping block.
They announced it was going to close, so I wrote this
tune. Then, last July, Ford announced they'd keep the
plant open until 2011. So while the song maybe isn't
wholly accurate in fact, it's accurate in spirit (hey,
close enough for a songwriter...) and plant closings are
something that's going on all across the country, so I
suppose it's accurate somewhere.

The Key in Bill s Backyard

Once a year or so, a friend of mine (and fine guitar
player you'll find here on YouTube) named Bill Hammond
hosts a get-together of musicians he calls "RoseJam"
(because it takes place in Roseville, Minn.) and one year
we were all sitting around in a circle in his backyard
and playing, and all of a sudden, I looked down and I saw
a rusty old key in the ground. I picked it up and asked
Bill what it went to, and he said he had no idea. Well,
when you have an omen like that, you have to write a
song, so I excused myself from the circle, grabbed a pen
and a piece of paper and wrote this song

The summer my son was 6 I asked him where he wanted
to go on vacation and he said, "I wanna go see the
mountain with faces." So, assuming he meant Mt. Rushmore,
which isn't a too terribly long drive from St. Paul,
that's where we went. I had read in some parenting
magazine that a way to keep the kids occupied while on
vacation was to get them a couple of those disposable
cameras so they can take pictures. In retrospect, I'm

Christmas Eve Blues

Odd story behind this one. I used to attend a church
in downtown St. Paul called House of Mercy. It seemed to
cater to artists and musicians (as well as everyone else)
and one year they decided to put together a Christmas
album. They'd bring in musicians who were members of the
congregation and have them record a Christmas tune. After
inquiring whether I could be on it, they got around to
saying, "umm, OK," and then I decided that there really
weren't any Christmas tunes or carols I wanted to cover.
