Stella By Starlight (reharmonised). Loosely based on
a reharmonised lead sheet by Andy Laverne that I saw in
an old Keyboard Magazine.
It is just one play through of the song. I tried to make
it as simple to play as I could. There are several other
versions on Youtube by Lot2learn and 7notemode that are

Band-in-a-Box backing tracks accompaniment software from
PGMusic. Although my performance contains mistakes (I
call it the "human factor"), the bass and drums are
error-free in timing and notes. This could cause the
music to sound stiff or mechanical (as many midi-based
backing tracks do), however with the new Band-In-A-Box
"Real Tracks" feature, real players are playing real

My Grandparents special love song. Grandfather was a
musician who played in the local theaters and for
dances(early 1920's) Each working night when he brought
home his earnings they would put some away for the future
they planned and their little girl. He was the love of
my Grandmother's life. Sadly, he contracted tuberculosis
and died in his late 20's. Though Grandmother married
again this was the song that she requested to be played
at her funeral. The little girl became my mother.
I hope the grandparents are sharing happy times again.

Here is a little number I cooked-up dedicated to the
return of the esteemed Volvoxburger here on YT. The title
reflects my respect for his total embodiment of the
funkification factor. Be sure to check out his channel to
observe his command over the Rhodes keyboard and assorted
synth patches played on his controller keyboard.
Everywhere he goes, he leaves a trail of funk in his

As a member of the Dave Sterner Quintet I am posting
something fun from a recent gig. There were some major
technical difficulties with the camera operator -
including but not limited to: dropping the camera, shaky
footage, finger in front of the lens, hand in front of
the lens, and a woman's head taking-up most of the
screen. In an effort to salvage the tune I had to crop as
much useful video as possible and cover-up the rest with
the cheesy effects.

Better Days Ahead is probably my most favorite Pat
Metheny song. The melody is so fantastic (and hard!). The
song has a form that is only 23 bars long instead of the
usual 24. This song was hard enough for me just to learn
the melody and then to add the left hand chords - hello.
I still haven't figured-out how to solo on this very
well. You'll hear me repeat myself and hit an odd note
here and there. I just love this song so much I wanted to
post a version even if it still needs a little work. Yes,

If I Were A Bell - Jazz Piano

Another classic standard by Frank Loesser, "If I Were A
Bell" uses a common device starting on the dominant 7th
of the II chord (think of "But Not For Me" and Our Love
Is Here To Stay" as other examples). This makes for an
interesting and sometimes challenging improvisational
structure. The best version of this song I have ever
heard is by the Keith Jarrett Trio. I have played this in
the key he does (Ab) and at the tempo he does (140 BPM)
but that's where the similarity ends. ;-)

For this "tutorial" I thought it would be interesting to
try and take a closer look at some of my thought
processes while playing in a live trio performance. I
have annotated the video in an effort to share my
analysis.
Here are also a few "rules" I have that I use to try and
guide my playing - I'm sure there are more but I'll share
this much now and add more as I think of them.
1. Have fun - this is first and foremost. If I'm not
doing rule 1 I might as well just pack-up and go home.

Grooveyard - a great vehicle for soulful improvisation
written by the late great jazz pianist Carl Perkins
(yeah, the OTHER Carl Perkins). Taken at a nice 'n easy
105 BPM that lends itself perfectly to a laid back
groove.
What is the one difference in this video that is not
present in any of the other 50 + videos I've posted?
(Hint: it's part of the video not the audio).
Ok, I'll tell you - I'm wearing a watch. Why? To remind
me of how important the feel of time is when playing at
this tempo.

Love Walked In - Solo Piano and Trio

A wonderful melody on this classic Gershwin tune provides
a great vehicle for improvisation. I tried to do a little
bit of reharmonization during the solo piano rubato intro
and then play the trio version using the new "Real Drums"
and "Real Bass" accompaniment feature of the program
Band-in-a Box. These are actual musicians playing drums
and an upright bass but all programmed through the
Band-in-a-Box program from PGMusic. It's a fantastic
practice aid and well worth the investment.

For me, this tune by Charles Mingus is defined by it's
distinctive chord progressions. There is a somwhat
jumpy, discontinuous structure embedded in the chord
changes that gives the song its signature sound. I
thought this post was a fairly good demonstration how
minor changes in the chord structure can give a song a
very different feel. Most of the chords have not been
changed, just re-voiced to give a more continuous flow
between the chord changes with a slightly modal
orientation.
