fronting one of the most underrated soul groups of the
60s and it would take the Northern Soul movement to
deliver him due respect. Recording for Brunswick, that
group cut a string of Chicago soul classics. As a solo
artist, Smith stepped out for Mayfield Records, one of
the early labels owned by the giant of Windy City soul,
Curtis Mayfield. This chugging, chunky lump of funk-soul
from 1968 remains practically unknown today, although its
brilliance is clear for all to hear.
